***WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE LOST OR FOUND A PET***
*DO NOT HAND A FOUND DOG OVER TO ANYONE WITHOUT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP**
1. Phone your local council and surrounding council districts and inform them. The rangers will quite often be patrolling the streets and they are usually the first person to pick up stray animals.
Please see the following link for a full list of council contact numbers:
https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=260472660661707
You can also phone the Department for transport, energy and infrastructure as these are road contractors employed by councils and are usually the people who collect deceased animals from the roads. Ph (08) 8343 2222
2.
Within 24 hours of your pet going missing you should contact the following people:
• RSPCA Headquarters Adelaide 1300 4 RSPCA (77722)
• RSPCA Animal Shelter Lonsdale - Lost pets and surrenders: 8382 0888
• RSPCA Animal Shelter Lonsdale - Adoptions: 8382 9962
• Animal Welfare League Wingfield 8348 1300
• Animal Welfare league Elizabeth West 8256 0000
You can also send your pet’s photo to the RSPCA at animalhouse@rspcasa.asn.au
Make sure you keep in contact and visit the animal shelters regularly as some animal descriptions can be difficult to match over the phone
PLEASE NOTE: the RSPCA only keep a record of lost pets for 4 weeks, after this period if your pet is still missing you will need to file another lost report with them.
Remember, the RSPCA and AWL probably have hundreds of stray dogs come into their care every month so you will need to be as accurate as possible with your description.
If your pet is a cross bred dog/cat it is always a good idea to go to the shelter and actually look at the stray dogs/cats. You might call saying you have lost your maltese x but they might actually have the dog on the computer system as shih tzu x etc
3. Fill out an online lost report with The Animal Welfare League by clicking on the following link:
https://www.animalwelfare.com.au/LostpetForm/tabid/208/Default.aspx
4. Phone all local veterinary clinics and after hours emergency centres.
Useful numbers
Adelaide Animal Emergency Centre Ph: (08) 8371 0333
Adelaide Animal Hospital Ph: (08) 8364 1577
5. If your dog is microchipped ensure that the microchip details are up to date and current. If unsure phone the Central Animal Records Tel: 03 9706 3187
6. Do a letter box drop, door knock and advertise on local information boards and the newspaper. Place a free ad on gumtree by clicking on the following link:http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-SelectCategory?CatId=18433
7. Place an ad in your local messenger newspaper, this is often free of charge. Also place ad ad in The Advertiser for a minimum of 3 days including either a Saturday or Sunday issue. You can also place ads in The Trading Post.
Placing a FOUND advert in The Advertiser is free of charge phone 131 841
8. Lastly but not least, post an advert on our site to inform other Adelaideans that your pet is missing and we will do our best to get the word out to as many people as possible. Please don't forget to keep us updated as our wonderful fans always love to hear of a lost pet being returned home.
If you've lost a Parrot then please also place an ad with Parrot Alert and us https://www.facebook.com/ParrotAlertFansPage?hc_location=timeline
